FAQ’s

What is Occupational Therapy (OT)?

OT is the belief that “occupations are central to a client’s health, identity, and sense of competence and have particular meaning and value to the client.” “In occupational therapy, occupations refer to the everyday activities that people do as individuals, in families, and with communities to occupy time and bring meaning and purpose to life. Occupations include things people need to, want to, and are expected to do”  (OT Practice Framework 4)

What is MH OT?

Occupational therapy has a rich history of promoting mental health in all areas of practice through the use of meaningful and enjoyable occupations (Meyer, 1922). The aim of occupational therapy services in mental health is to help all individuals develop and maintain positive mental health, prevent mental ill health, and recover from mental health challenges in order to live full and productive lives.

What is equine assisted therapy?

This is therapy provided by an OT, OTA, PT, PTA, SLP, LCSW, or LPC using interactions with horses to facilitate client centered goals for those specific professions.

The term “hippotherapy” refers to how occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech-language pathology professionals use evidence-based practice and clinical reasoning in the purposeful manipulation of equine movement as a therapy tool to engage sensory, neuromotor and cognitive systems to promote functional outcomes. Best practice dictates professionals integrate equines into the patient’s plan of care, along with other therapy tools and/or strategies.

Who is this appropriate for?

Anyone who struggles with achieving full functionality in their everyday life. If you have lost the ability to accomplish things that you used to do well then this is for you. If your satisfaction with the everyday occupations that you perform has diminished this can be of help to you.

What can I expect at my first session?

The first session will be an evaluation. An opportunity for everyone to get to know each other, evaluate your personal struggles and challenges, and create a treatment plan and goals.

What are some common conditions you treat?

Do I need a referral?

A prescription for OT from your personal doctor is required for insurance to pay for services.

What is the difference between OT/PT?

The most basic difference between OT and PT is that a PT focuses on improving the patient's ability to move their body whereas an OT focuses on improving the patient's ability to perform activities of daily living. Additionally, PT’s foundation was in physical rehabilitation whereas OT was founded in mental healthcare and physical rehabilitation. See article-OT vs PT: What's the Difference? (mcphs.edu)

How long does each visit take?

At this time, we typically see clients once a week. 30-60 minutes is a usual session. Occasionally if it is necessary a session can go up to 90 minutes. This does not happen very often.
